Top 6 Non-Product Gifts for Travelers

Getting a gift for a traveler can be a difficult task, there is a multitude of really cool gadgets, but with baggage fees getting larger, and space at a premium, do you really want to give them another thing that they will  need to pack in a bag on a trip?

Rather than focusing on another gizmo, there are other things that can make their travelling more enjoyable or exciting without having to give them something wrapped up in a box.

There are our “Out of the Box” gifts for the traveler in your life:

AAA membership:

While not the most exciting of gifts, for around 80 dollars AAA gives you a ton of discounts in terms of flights/vacations/destination which any traveler will need. We have used our discounts to get cheaper rental cars as well as airline flights to our favorite destination.  In addition, you get the piece of mind of knowing that if you have a break down either on vacation or in regular life, AAA will be there to pick you up and tow your car or give your batter the jump it needs.  Not to mention the various discounts on everything from movie tickets, restaurants and museums that come along with the membership.

Ski Pass:

Winter is coming and what better to give some sky passes to your loved one, over here in the Northeast there is a ton of different mountains offer a rainbows worth of different packages.  If you have a skier or snowboarder I am sure that they will love someone covering their lift pass.  On top of that, if  you have someone who has always wanted to ski or snowboard but hasn’t gotten out on the slopes, paying for lessons at a mountain should also be considered.  With the cold weather coming it is going to get harder and harder to get out and get some fresh air, ski passes and a lessons is perfect for getting a spud off the couch and on the slopes.

Trip it App:

The Trip It App is one of the best travel apps around, it helps you organize your itinerary, searches your inbox for any travel related reservations and automatically uploads it on your APP.  For a heavy traveler I would suggest the premium version which cost $50 a year, provides up to date alerts on cancelations, delays, gate changes and baggage claim locations.  The Pro version also will help you search for alternative flights and track your Fare Refunds if you have any.

TSA Precheck application fee:

If you have waited in super long lines for security (I am looking at you JFK and LGA travelers) then applying for TSA-Pre is a must.  All it takes is a quick online application and an even quicker in person appointment (to do background checks and finger printing) at an enrollment center which can be found at most major airports.  For $85 you are covered for 5 years of membership.  PreCheck allows you to go through a separate security line with less restriction in terms of taking things out your baggage or taking your shoes or jacket off.   The lines are usually significantly smaller than going through regular security and certainly much less stressful especially if you are late for your flight.  If you have a more international traveler, consider Global Entry, which allows you to quickly speed through customs coming into the US and also comes with TSA PreCheck already included.

Airline points:

Airline points an interesting gift, you either have enough to buy tickets or more than likely you are in the horrible middle ground of having plenty of miles but not enough to get a free flight.  If you don’t take enough flight, your miles might end up expiring on you (it costs money to get them unexpired). So instead of wasting them why not gift them to someone who can use them?  You can also buy miles/points for someone and help them get out of that ugly gray area.

Finally Surprise them with a Surprise Hilton Getaway:

Hilton has a ton of hotels all around the world, some of the best presents we have given family was a one or two-night stay in a hotel.  It gives them a change to truly step away from rush of their lives and truly have a vacation.  There is also a number of packages available at the hotels which can include experiences and meals depending on the package.
