In the first Madagascar, we met the main characters Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Gloria the hippopotamus (Jada Pinkett Smith), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer). The journey starts when Marty looking for the wild open spaces of Connecticut gets friends and himself kicked out of the luxurious Grand Central Zoo home and shipped back to Africa. After another mishap, the foursome along with some mischievous monkeys and penguins end up in Madagascar.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa begins with the four friends about to board the airplane with their new friends the lemurs, King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen) and Maurice, the King’s assistant (Cedric the Entertainer). The City Slickers are ready to go back to New York City.
As you can tell by the title, they don’t make it to NYC but instead crash into Africa. Where for the first time in their lives, the animals see where they came from and where they each face a lot of issues and have to do a lot of soul searching.
Throughout the movie, old characters from the first Madagascar show up and add to the charm of the movie. For example, the Old Lady is the leader for the stranded New Yorkers.
You don’t have to see the first movie because directors, Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath recap what happened to the four friends before and after arriving in Madagascar.
The only criticism I have is the beginning was too sad. It shows how Alex was trapped by hunters and shipped in a crate to New York City. Other than that, I thought the movie was great. It’s a movie especially for kids but still for adults.
I would recommend everyone to see it. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa has you laughing, smiling and feeling good after watching it.
