So, was Moana 2 worth the wait? Let’s dive into the review.

Moana 2 Review – A Familiar but Stunning Return to the Seas

After the massive success of Moana (2016), expectations for the sequel were sky-high. Disney brings us back to the lush world of Oceania, reuniting us with Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on another thrilling adventure. This time, Moana is called by the ocean once more to journey beyond the known waters, where she encounters new allies, hidden dangers, and a powerful trickster bat goddess named Matangi (Awhimai Fraser).

What Works:

Gorgeous Animation: As expected, Disney delivers breathtaking visuals. The ocean, islands, and characters look better than ever, creating a stunning cinematic experience.

Incredible Music: Featuring returning composers Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, alongside Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Moana 2 brings a fresh batch of powerful songs. While none quite reach “How Far I’ll Go” levels of iconic, they beautifully complement the story.

Strong Themes: The film continues to explore themes of destiny, self-discovery, and heritage. Moana remains an inspiring protagonist, and the new characters, including her younger sister Simea, add depth to her journey.

What Could Be Better:

A Familiar Plot: While Moana 2 introduces new locations and characters, the story structure feels a little too similar to the first film. Some moments play it safe rather than truly expanding Moana’s world.

Underdeveloped Villain: Matangi, the bat goddess, had the potential to be an iconic Disney villain, but she doesn’t get enough screen time to fully realize her impact.

Final Verdict:

8/10Moana 2 is a visually stunning and heartfelt sequel that fans of the original will enjoy. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor, it delivers a fun and meaningful adventure worth watching.

If you loved Moana, this sequel is a must-see. Now that it’s available on digital, it’s the perfect time to gather the family and set sail with Moana once again!
