Last Saturday, my younger sister and I went to the screening of The Spy Next Door held at the AMC 34th Street Theatre in New York. The commercials reminded me a lot of The Pacificer. Both had men that were that were involved with the government and had to take care of kids. After watching the movie, yes they had similarities but there were differences that made this movie still worth seeing.
Being a spy is almost every boy’s dream. Bob Ho (Jackie Chan) is an agent of the CIA from China working in the US and must hide it from the rest of his loved ones. Bob decides to leave his spy job and commit himself to his girlfriend Gillian (Amber Valletta) and her three kids. Unfortunately her kids hate Bob and will do anything for her to leave him since he is ‘boring’. There are family matters Gillian must attend to and leaves the kids with Bob. Gillian kids are; Farren (Madeline Carroll), a 13 year old who thinks she is too cool for the world, Ian (Will Shadley), a geeky outcast desperately seeking popularity in school, and Nora (Alina Foley), the 4 year old who just acts like a 4 year old (what else is she going to do?). Bob uses his spy techniques to take control over the three crazy monsters and get them to listen to him. While Bob deals with kids, his Russian nemesis Poldark (Magnùs Scheving), has escaped from prison and is brewing a scheme to gain money. Bob is forced backed into his spy world since his family is danger.
I don’t want to give out any more information of the movie than what I already have. I think this movie is good and fathers will especially love to take their kids to see it. There is a lot of action, hence having Jackie Chan as an actor = action! Seeing Bob struggling with the kids and how he dealt with the chaos was funny. I believe boys will prefer to watch this movie than girlie girls. There is a lot of PG fighting scenes that boys will think are really cool. George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus were both in the movie as agents from the CIA. They weren’t as involved in the movie as I had hoped.
