The Blind Side Movie Review

By Divina

I know Readers, you are probably wondering why it took me soooooo long to see and review Blind Side, after all the great reviews and the possible Oscar nod to Sandra Bullock etc. Unfortunately, the movie came out on November 20th, probably the busiest time of the year for me with the holidays, shopping and my already active life!  So this week I finally had a chance to go and I am so happy I did.

The movie was just so, so well done.  The writing, acting and directing just come together perfectly.

Quick summary:  The movie is based on book by the same name that chronicles the rise of Michael Oher from the projects and poverty to professional football with the Baltimore Ravens. It goes on to show how he succeeds because he finds his family in an unlikely white wealthy couple and their children.

This story can easily be directed or written as too sappy, too emotional or too unrealistic.  You can make Oher (Quinton Aron) too broken and damaged by his childhood.  You can also make Sean (Tim McGraw) and Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock) Tuohy too saintly for taking in this poor black kid from the Hurt side of Memphis, Tennessee.   Luckily, writer/director John Lee Hancock (The Rookie) had the magic touch and portrays this story as an inspiring tale of defeating the greatest challenges to find happiness.

And yes, my fellow critics were right, Bullock does a great job being this sassy caring Southern woman.  Cathy Bates adds humor to the movie as Oher’s tutor who helps him unlock his natural intelligence.  But what is up with Tim McGraw? Was he suppose to be eye candy?  He and actor playing Oher barely spoke in the movie.  The Touhy’s son SJ had more lines than either of them.

I loved how the Tuohys and Oher made powerful differences in each other’s lives because of the power of love.  And, yes the movie has a happy ending.  No spoiler note required, just check out how well Oher is doing in the professional football field this season.
